Colette Roberts, Business Developer with Express Employment Professionals presented "Employment Trends in a Recovering Economy," the management strategies businesses are using in relation to staffing and employment in this unstable economy. She gave an overview of current statistics and trends indicated by the US Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, as they apply to the State of Washington, Clallam County and Port Angeles.
July 20:
The five candidates running for
Clallam County Director of Community Development (DCD). The candidates are: Incumbent John Miller, currently serving his first term (2006-present) as Director of Community Development, his challengers are Alan Barnard, Sheila Roark Miller, Sean Ryan and Tim Woolett. The candidates presented in panel form introducing themselves, stating their platorms, and fielding questions.
July 13:
The three candidates running for Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney; a four year term and a partisan office. The candidates are, incumbent Deb Kelly (Rep.) currently serving her second consecutive term (2003-present) as a Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney, Lauren Erickson (Dem.) and Larry Freedman (Dem.).
July 6:
The three candidates running for Clallam County Commissioner District 3, a four year term and a partisan office. The candidates are, incumbent Mike Doherty (Dem.) serving his third consecutive term (1998-present) as a Clallam County Commissioner with one prior term in 1976, Robin Poole (Rep.), and Bill Peach (Rep.)
June 22:
Mark Bowman, Vice President and Senior Loan Officer for the North Olympic Peninsula region of ShoreBank Enterprise Cascadia (SBEC), a non-profit affiliate of ShoreBank Corporation of Chicago, IL. He has been with SBEC for four years providing loans to small business owners and non-profits. He also provides strategic planning consulting to nonprofits. SBEC helps businesses, individuals, and organizations create solutions to the challenges facing our communities. Their headquarters is in Ilwaco, WA.
June 15:
Kevin Van De Wege, 24th District Legislative Representative, gave an update on the 2010 regular session of the legislature, a selection of the bills he sponsored/co-sponsored, and more of the tough decisions that faced this session's legislators regarding the state budget, economy, and issues particular to this district, Clallam County, and Port Angeles.
June 8:
Lynn Kessler, Majority Leader, 24th District Legislative Representative, who will be retiring this year after 18 years, sat on the following committees this past session: Ways and Means, Rules, and Executive Rules Committee. Rep. Kessler came and spoke to the PABA about her achievements, what happened during the 2010 Legislative Session, and where the challenges remain.
June 1:
The Waterfront Committee gave an update on the plan to come into compliance with the State's Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) requirements and the proposal to aquire the water storage tank on the Rayonier property by the City of Port Angeles and Harbor-Works, Public Development Authority. The WRIA committee will gave an update on WRIA 18 and where it is in the rules making process and there was a brief presentation in support of getting initiative 1082 on the November ballot, by North Peninsula Builders Association's immediate past president, Kevin Russell.
May 18:
This week the Port Angeles Business Associationheard from Scott Tucker, co-owner of N-Dub Productions and producer of the NW Cup, a downhill mountain bike race at Dry Hill. Scott presented a review of the race and talked about the international attention and attendance it is getting in both the amateur and professional mountain bike arena. Dry Hill is has a large network of trails well suited for all skill levels of downhill mountain bikers. It is located on Green Crow and Department of Natural Resources timber land just west of Port Angeles. NW Cup races are scheduled in March, April, June, and July.
May 11:
Jane Pryne, Superintendent, Port Angeles School District was the featured speaker. Jane discussed the district's budget, student enrollment projections, and the "Race to the Top" program.
May 4:
This week the Port Angeles Business Association heard from Diane Schostak, Executive Director of the Olympic Peninsula Visitor Bureau (OPVB) and Executive Administrator of the Olympic Peninsula Tourism Commission (OPTC). Diane outlined the mission, vision, and areas of focus for the OPVB and OPTC. She discussed who the partners are, how the partnerships were formed, how they are funded, as well as how they decide where to apply that funding. Diane gave an overview of both organization's marketing strategy, outreach, and other activities in the I-5 corridor, regionally, abroad, and most specifically their concentrated efforts in Victoria and Lower Vancouver Island.
April 27:
This week the Port Angeles Business Association heard from both the Port Angeles City Manager, Kent Myers and the Mayor, Dan Di Guilio. Kent and Dan gave an update on their recent efforts to increase visitor activity from Southern Vancouver Island and what the City of Port Angeles will be doing in the future to support this effort. Kent and Dan engaged the PABA Membership in a discussion about what the city can do both in the short-term and the long-term to increase the number of visitors from Victoria and Southern Vancouver Island.
